Carte-de-Visite of a Naval Apprentice

Anchor Icon

This carte-de-visite, or calling card, produced by W. H. Fitton of Worcester, Massachusetts, depicts an unidentified USS Constitution sailor from the ship’s Apprentice Training Squadron period. “Constitution” is visible on the sailor’s hatband.

Teenage boys who signed up for the Apprentice Training Squadron learned ship handling along with academic studies. Upon completion of the program, the successful apprentices transferred as sailors to regular duty naval warships.
