Anchor Icon

In October 1925, 13 year old Julia Kochevar wrote this essay titled “Why Will the Preservation of the U.S.S. Constitution, ‘Old Ironsides’ Promote Patriotism?” She wrote her two page essay as part of a national contest organized by the Elks Lodge to support the restoration of the USS Constitution. At the time, Kochevar was an 8th grader at St. Joseph School in Grand Junction, Colorado. Her essay earned her first place in the Colorado state competition, and shortly thereafter, first place in the national competition. She framed her essay alongside her prize medals. You can read the entirety of Kochevar’s essay here.
