Letter from Samuel L. Wilson to “Friend Everett,” September 24, 1861

Samuel L. Wilson, an acting midshipman aboard USS Constitution at the U.S. Naval Academy at Newport, Rhode Island, wrote this letter to his friend, Everett, on September 24, 1861. Constitution was serving as a training ship at the time, and Wilson began there on September 20. In the letter, Wilson writes of his early experiences at the Naval Academy and his observations of the historic ship. He graduated from the Naval Academy in November 1864 and eventually went on to become a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy. Wilson died on August 1, 1879.
