Letter from Ellen to her brother, August 2, 1861

In this letter, written from Wickford, Rhode Island, on August 2, 1861, Ellen tells her brother about her time sailing and notes that she plans to go aboard USS Constitution in Newport the following day. Constitution was stationed at the U.S. Naval Academy in Newport at the time, serving as a school ship for midshipmen studying to become officers in the U.S. Navy. While there, the famous “Old Ironsides” attracted many visitors and became a popular tourist destination.
