Portrait of John Thomas Jefferson
This glossy photograph, printed sometime in the 20th century, depicts a carte de visite portrait of John Thomas Jefferson in 1868, when he was about 14 years old. Jefferson had enlisted in the U.S. Navy the year before, when the USS Constitution was serving as a school ship. In this staged portrait, Jefferson is wearing his dress blues, which were appropriate to his rank as 1st Class Boy in the Navy. He also holds a book in his left hand.
John Thomas Jefferson also wore a different uniform that bears evidence of an accident that he survived while detached to the Albemarle in 1867. To read more about this accident and Jefferson’s life, visit this page.
