School Ships
This photograph, taken by James Wallace Black (1825-1896), shows USS Constitution (center) joined by USS Santee and USS Macedonian in Newport, Rhode Island. The three vessels were serving as school ships for midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy. They were relocated from Annapolis, Maryland to Newport, Rhode Island in April 1861 and remained in Newport for the duration of the American Civil War. Black was a prominent American photographer based in Boston, Massachusetts.
