Portrait of Caroline Gwinn
This oil on panel portrait of Caroline Salles Lynch Gwinn at age 36 was painted by American portrait artist Thomas Sully (1783-1872) between March 23 and April 29, 1839. Sully lived most of his life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and this portrait was commissioned for the price of $150 while Caroline’s husband, John Gwinn, was a lieutenant at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Caroline’s portrait was completed two years after her husband’s.
