Caroline Salles Lynch Gwinn Collection

Anchor Icon

The Caroline Salles Lynch Gwinn Collection provides insight into the life and household matters of a military family in the 19th century. Caroline Salles Lynch married John Gwinn III, then a lieutenant in the United States Navy, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 22, 1823. John Gwinn went on to become captain of USS Constitution in 1848. He died a year later, becoming the first captain to die while in command of the ship.

The collection contains mostly correspondence, including letters between Caroline, John, and their children, and two letters from USS Constitution‘s Assistant Surgeon P. J. Horwitz, written on September 7, 1849, informing Mrs. Gwinn and Captain Thomas Hayes about the death of Captain John Gwinn. Also included are memoranda, receipts, pamphlets, photographs, ephemera, and a copy of Caroline and John’s marriage certificate.
