Isaac Hull’s Handkerchief

Anchor Icon

This linen handkerchief belonged to Captain Isaac Hull, as indicated by the inscription “Commodore/Hull U.S.N.” in one corner. Hull was in command of USS Constitution from June 17, 1810 to September 15, 1812 and was victorious in the battle with the British frigate HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812. Handkerchiefs were common accessories in the early 19th century.

Hull’s name may have been stitched onto the handkerchief as a way of identifying it when it was sent to a laundry, or it could have been added at a later date, confirming its ownership by one of the most celebrated U.S. Navy officers in the War of 1812.
