List of principal blocks for USS Constitution, c.1797
This list of the principal blocks, or pulleys, used in the rigging of USS Constitution indicates the complex rigging needed for large sailing warships. The list was likely created by Constitution’s first captain, Samuel Nicholson, and shared with James Sever of USS Congress. The blocks were made by experienced craftspeople and had to be custom ordered. Multiplying this number of blocks by the six naval frigates being built along the East Coast at the time provides a better understanding of the scale of industries needed to supply the new United States Navy.
